The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in the WACA.
He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
