The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
